site.btaPresident Radev: Changes to Constitution Are Possible Only After Government's Resignation and Fair Early Elections

August 14 (BTA) - "Talks about the Constitution and Bulgaria's future are possible only after the resignations demanded by the public and the organization of fair early elections," said President Radev in an address to the nation on Friday. He was responding to a statement by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov urging for the convocation of a Grand National Assembly and changes to the Constitution.

Radev said that Borissov's proposal showed a disregard for the Constitution as Article 159 stipulates that the right to an initiative for convening a Grand National Assembly belongs to at least half of the MPs or the President but not the Prime Minister.

The head of State said that after more than a month of protests trust in the ruling majority has been lost irretrievably and that the represssions, provocations and attempts to ignore the public discontent only confirm the need for the resignations of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev.
