October 9 (BTA) - Bulgaria's National Assembly Friday voted, 119-54, to elect Alexander Andreev chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC). Andreev was the only candidate for the office and was nominated by the ruling GERB Party.

The MPs of GERB, the United Patriots (the junior partner in the ruling coalition), Volya and four independent MPs voted in favour of Andreev election, while the MPs of the opposition BSP for Bulgaria and six independents voted against. The Movement for Rights and Freedoms stood out of the vote.

Andreev succeeds Stefka Stoeva, who resigned in September after she objected to a proposed amendments to the Election Code intended to make the CEC solely responsible for the acquisition of voting machines for political elections.

Andreev has been a CEC member since 2007. In a previous term in office, he was been nominated to the Commission by the BSP. RI/ZH
