One of the Best Heavyweight
Boxers in the World"
Hamburg, November 11 (BTA) - A scandal marred the final news
conference before the RING heavyweight champion match in Hamburg
on Saturday. Kubrat Pulev's promotional group, Sauerland Event,
whose members were denied access to the news conference,
released an official statement explaining why the Bulgarian
professional boxer refused to take part in the final news
conference with Ukrainian champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Pulev said he felt the snub was in bad taste and skipped the
press conference to hold his own meeting with the media. "The
security refused to grant entrance to two members of the
management and our press officer who did not want to be on the
top table but simply to attend the presser," promoter Kalle
Sauerland told RingTV. "Pulev had made it clear beforehand that
he wanted his management there and in the almost 40 years of our
promotional business we have never experienced anything like
it."
"That is why I had to communicate with the media in the hotel
lobby. I think the conduct of Klitschko and the organizers is
not professional and the Wladimir is not worthy of being world
champion," Pulev said. In his opinion, such actions do not
become the champion and he is trying to press him in the corner,
a battle of brains for which Pulev declared himself ready.
At the news conference Klitschko, in turn, demonstratively
placed an empty chair with an inscription of "Kubrat Pulev". He
told the press in attendance that only three members of the
contender's team had been allowed to attend and that was
according to the contract for the match.
Agence France-Presse, describing the scandal, also quoted
Klitschko as saying that Pulev is definitely one of the best
heavyweight boxers in the world and very good against hulky
opponents.
The 33-year-old Pulev (20-0, 11 knockouts) of Bulgaria will be
making his first bid for a heavyweight title against Klitschko
(62-3, 52 KOs), who will be making his 17th consecutive
