Trade Union Confederation Urges for Effective Common EU Policy on Refugee Crisis

Sofia, December 20 (BTA) - "The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) insists on the development and implementation of an effective common EU policy on the refugee crisis," the CITUB Coordination Council said in a position occasioned by International Migrants Day, December 18.

"The delay of the proposed establishment of a uniform system for the reception and integration of migrants in the EU is unconstructive and dangerous in the present situation," the Confederation pointed out.

The CITUB insists on quick and coordinated action by the EU institutions to ensure immigrants' systematic and full identification and registration.

The EU still lacks a common list of safe countries of origin, and each Member State determines the nationals of which country have grounds to be granted refugee status, the position says.

The CITUB calls for even more effective cooperation between the EU and the refugees' countries of origin.

The CITUB categorically opposes the demands of British Prime Minister David Cameron for strengthening British sovereignty and the proposals regarding labour mobility and EU citizens' access to the British welfare system.

The Confederation points out that the number of asylum seekers in Bulgaria has increased dramatically in the outgoing year, reaching 20,000. "Demonstrating humanity must combine with a realistic security policy," the CITUB argues.
