Prime Minister Borissov  Solicits Support for Irina Bokova's Bid to Head UN

Sofia, July 29 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has sent letters asking support for Bulgaria's candidate Irina Bokova for the post of UN Secretary General, the government's information service said Friday.

Borissov has approached the prime ministers of the UK - Theresa May, of Spain - Mariano Rajoy, of Japan - Shinzo Abe, of Malaysia - Najib Razak and New Zealand - John Key.

Borissov asks his counterparts for their countries' support in their capacity as members of the UN Security Council. According to him, this would not just be an expression of the friendship between Bulgaria and their countries, but would also help further enhance and deep in bilateral relations.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister underscores that electing the next UN secretary general is of primary importance for all. Borissov says he is convinced that 70 years after the UN's establishment, the time has come for the post to be entrusted to a representative of an Eastern European regional culture.

According to him, the Bulgarian candidacy is one of the strongest in the UN system and will contribute to the development of specific actions, aimed at effectively overcoming the pressing challenges and threats, as well as encouraging peace and security.
