Kristalina Georgieva Threatens to Sue Those Who Spread Falsehoods about Her

Brussels, October 19 (BTA) - European Commission Vice President Kristalina Georgieva has threatened to sue those who have spread falsehoods about her. In a bitter statement on Facebook responding to "the latest media attacks" on her, Georgieva wrote: "From now on I will defend my name in court. Many falsehoods have been spread about me. I will pursue those who continue to spread them through the courts."

Earlier this week, the US-based Foreign Policy Research Institute published an article on its website which says about Georgieva that "serious questions have been raised about her past in Soviet-era Bulgaria, as well as her alleged present family ties with a business conglomerate that U.S. diplomats in Sofia have described as 'once the doyen of Bulgarian organized crime.'" The article also says Georgieva was an informer for the one-time Communist secret services.

The Bulgarian wrote in her response: "Until now I have remained mostly silent about the constant attacks which are being made on me, in spite of the many distortions and outright lies which have sought to damage me and the office in which I serve. But I am not prepared to tolerate any longer a character assassination campaign which has been waged against me for many months. My patience has been tested to its limits. I have considered taking legal action in the past and decided to refrain from it. That chapter is over."

On Tuesday, the European Commission issued a statement saying that the allegations are not new and each one of them has been refuted.
