One of Oldest Bulgarian Politicians Ginyo Ganev Dies

Sofia, December 18 (BTA) - One of the oldest Bulgarian politicians Ginyo Ganev has died, Fatherland Union Chairman Simeon Simeonov said.

In the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century Ganev lived through three historical periods demonstrating his high IQ and political wisdom in all of them, said Simeonov. Bulgaria has lost the last politician of "the old time", he concluded.

Ganev was a public figure, jurist and politician. He was born on March 2, 1920 in the city of Bourgas. In 1953, he graduated in law from the Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia.

Ganev was member of three parliaments (from 7th to 9th in 1976-1990). A member of the leadership of the Fatherland Union since 1982.

After November 10, 1989 he chaired the Secretariat of the National Round Table. From June 1990 to September 1991 he was an MP at the 7th Grand National Assembly. Deputy chairman of the National Assembly from July 1990 to October 1991. He was instrumental in the adoption of the new Constitution by the 7th Grand National Assembly. He refused to become prime minister on two occasions. MP in the 38th and the 39th national assemblies (1997-2005).

He served as Bulgaria's first Ombudsman from April 13, 2005 to October 7, 2010.

National Assembly Chair Tsetska Tsacheva cabled condolences to the bereaved family, the press service of the National Assembly said.
