The options for the Innovation and Growth Ministry to support a Bulgarian creation for laser-induced thermonuclear fusion were discussed at a meeting between Minister Tomislav Donchev and scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) here on Friday. The Minister met with the team behind the new method for constructing particle accelerators directed at light atoms and nuclei through ultrashort laser impulses with high intensity, the Innovation Ministry said on its website.

Scientists from the BAS Institute of Electronics and the Institute of Solid State Physics, participants in the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI ERIC) project, have conducted an experiment with a laser system of the lab that demonstrates for the first time decay of helium nuclei with subsequent fusion reactions. The results, published in renown scientific journals and protected with an international patent, have generated strong scientific interest.
