Place du Pont-Neuf in Paris was renamed Place du Pont-Neuf–Christo and Jeanne-Claude in honour of the two artists on the 40th anniversary of the wrapping of the bridge. The ceremony was attended by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, Bulgarian Ambassador Radka Balabanova-Ruleva, political figures and artists, and members of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's family, the Bulgarian Embassy said on Facebook.
Visionary artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude transformed public spaces into spectacular, ephemeral works that have left a lasting mark on contemporary art. Their bold approach combined poetry, freedom and grandeur, captivating millions of spectators worldwide. Deeply connected to Paris, they found a unique source of inspiration in the city and carried out several major projects there: Wall of Oil Barrels - The Iron Curtain (1961-1962), the wrapping of Paul Niclausse's statue "Le Printemps" (Spring) in Trocadero (1964), Pont-Neuf (1975-1985) and the posthumous completion of wrapping the Arc de Triomphe (1961-2021), the Embassy said.
BTA's tribute to the two artists
The June issue of BTA's LIK magazine for literature, art, and culture is dedicated to Christo Javacheff (1935–2020) and his wife Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (1935–2009). June 13 marked their 90th birth anniversaries. LIK's June issue is entitled "Christo and Jeanne-Claude at 90 in Eternity". BTA will publish it in French, German and English with financial support from the Culture Ministry. The magazine is expected to be released in all three languages by the year's end and will be presented in Berlin and Paris.
This year marks three major anniversaries related to their work: 40 years since The Pont Neuf Wrapped in Paris, 30 years since Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin, and 20 years since The Gates installation in New York's Central Park.
