The top priority is what benefits Bulgaria and advances the Bulgarian national interest, Vazrazhdane's top-of-the-list candidate in the city of Plovdiv said in a television appearance, the party’s press service reported on Friday.
"There should be a referendum on whether to leave NATO, as the most democratic way to reflect the people's will is to ask them directly. In a true democracy, this means holding a referendum. If the people choose to stay in NATO, we support that decision. But if they choose otherwise, we must leave," Georgiev said.
Georgiev argued that the flaw in Bulgaria's "pseudo-democracy" lies in the failure to ask the people what they truly want. "No one asked the people if they wanted to join NATO or the European Union, if they supported exporting weapons to Ukraine or imposing sanctions on Russia, or if they supported the introduction of the euro," he said.
He added that democracy in Bulgaria is currently suspended, and only his party, Vazrazhdane, is fighting to restore it as the fundamental principle of governance.
