Asphalting a road in order to cover tracks is a crime too, There Is Such a People (TISP) leader Slavi Trifonov said on 7/8 TV on Wednesday. He was commenting on a May 16 crash involving a car carrying Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) co-leader Kiril Petkov.

On May 16, Petkov was riding in a car of the National Service for Protection (NSP) which crashed at the entrance to the village of Aksakovo. Petkov's party said that the crash was caused by a car suddenly jumping out of a road without priority. A man and a woman in their 60s were riding in the vehicle; the man subsequently died. Petkov and the driver of the NSP vehicle were not injured. Days later, citizens alerted that that the road section where the car crash had occurred was freshly asphalted. Caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev ordered a check into the matter.

"Who can order a road to be asphalted in order to hide the fact that there is no braking distance, or what the speed was, and at the cost of a human life?! Who can do something like that?" Trifonov asked. "In Bulgaria, an EU Member State, somebody orders to asphalt the road to cover up the tracks because there has been a death. The result of this is nothing. I don't know if anyone is investigating these people, trying to explain how this is possible," Trifonov said.

He was adamant that the Road Infrastructure Agency officer responsible cannot simply be fired. The law classifies this as a high-level crime, like the one by the perpetrators, Trifonov argued. "If we want to live in a normal country, it has to be a legal one, and in any legal country, this has to be investigated, analysed and the people involved have to be put behind bars. It should be clear, it should be clarified what happened because there has been a death," the TISP leader said.
