Foreign Minister Participates in EU Foreign Affairs Council Meeting in Luxembourg

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev took part in the regular monthly meeting of the European Union Foreign Affairs Council, held on Monday in Luxembourg, said the Foreign Ministry in Sofia. During the meeting, ministers discussed key topics, including Russian aggression against Ukraine, EU relations with the Indo-Pacific region, the situation in the Middle East, as well as developments in Sudan, Moldova, and Georgia.

The ministers reviewed recent developments and reaffirmed the EU’s determination to continue supporting Kyiv. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas briefed the Council on her recent visit to Kyiv and on progress in EU commitments regarding security, military training, and financial assistance for Ukraine.

In his remarks, Minister Georgiev stressed that Bulgaria consistently supports EU efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace based on the principles of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting the importance of maintaining transatlantic unity.

Bulgaria also supports the accelerated adoption of the 19th sanctions package against Russia and initiatives to establish a Special Tribunal for crimes committed.

Georgiev emphasized the importance of enhanced EU-NATO cooperation to strengthen the defence capabilities of the Eastern flank and the Black Sea region. He noted that the new EU Strategy for the Black Sea region provides opportunities for joint projects aimed at increasing regional security, stability, and connectivity.

Regarding EU relations with Indo-Pacific countries, ministers discussed preparations for the upcoming Fourth EU-Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum, scheduled for November 20–21 in Brussels. Bulgaria expressed support for deeper partnerships with key countries in the region, including India, Australia, Japan, and Vietnam, in the fields of security, energy, digitalization, and sustainable development.

During discussions on the Middle East, ministers welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas. Georgiev emphasized that Bulgaria supports all diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
