European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said Monday that she had thanked the Bulgarian authorities for their efforts to bring justice against those responsible for the desecration of Europe House in Sofia.

According to Metsola, the European Parliament is looking for ways to strengthen security measures for EU staff. She said she appreciates the support of the Bulgarian authorities, as this is not the first such incident.

Earlier in the day, Metsola spoke with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov. The two discussed issues related to Ukraine, defence, competitiveness, and the acts of vandalism against Europe House. Metsola emphasized that the right to peaceful protest in Europe should not lead to violence and aggression.

She further stressed that she had personally and publicly condemned these acts of violence on the day of the incident and shared this stance with her fellow MEPs.

The European Commission's building (Europe House) in Sofia got defaced on February 22 after a Vazrazhdane-organized protest against the adoption of the euro.
