The Bulgarian government approved EUR 50,000 in funding to help meet some of the most urgent humanitarian needs in Yemen through the agency of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the government press service reported on Friday. The money will be secured from the Foreign Ministry budget for international development and humanitarian aid.

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is one of the worst in the world, the press release said. The conflict in the country, which has been going on for 10 years, is causing enormous suffering and creating a risk of a humanitarian disaster. The military conflict, the security risks, the economic collapse, the natural disasters and the lack of access to healthcare services in the Southwest Asian country have caused two-thirds of its population to depend on humanitarian supplies and have created food insecurity for 17.6 million people. The severe shortage of medicines, vaccines and medical treatment services in Yemen poses great risks for the health and the life of the people.

The ICRC currently supports 53 healthcare establishments in Yemen, the Bulgarian government said.
