Grigor Dimitrov lost in the second round of the ATP 500 indoor tournament in Vienna on Thursday.
The Bulgarian lost 6:3, 2:6, 4:6 to Daniil Medvedev, ranked number 1, after 2 hours and 6 minutes of play. In doing so, Dimitrov conceded a third straight loss to the former leader in the world rankings, the first of those three being again in Vienna last year at the semi-final stage.
Now, in the quarterfinals, defending champion Medvedev will play another Russian, Karen Khachanov.
Medvedev finished the match with a total of 14 aces compared to only five for the Bulgarian. The winning shots were also in favour of the Russian, 31 to 21, and Dimitrov made fewer unprovoked errors, 7 to 13.
Bulgaria's highest ranked tennis player Dimitrov will get 45 points for participating in the second round of the tournament in Vienna for the world ranking and EUR 35,245 from the prize fund, which amounts to a total of EUR 2.4 million.
