Bulgarian Fund for Women
Raises Funds to Support
Crisis, Counselling Centres

Sofia, December 8 (BTA) - The Bulgarian Fund for Women (BFW) are raising funds for crisis and counselling centres across the country, BFW's Raya Raeva told BTA in an interview. Such centres are at the forefront of the fight against domestic violence. The Invisible Frontline is a charity campaign responding to the rise of domestic violence during the pandemic.

She added that, unlike the coronavirus, domestic violence is a hidden pandemic that has been the bane of many Bulgarian families for a long time.

The cases of women and children victims of domestic violence who seek help are much more serious and require immediate intervention, the expert said.

There are only 17 crisis and counselling centres countrywide and the services they offer are systematically underfinanced, she said.

The campaign is raising funds for the most urgent needs: measures against the spread of COVID-19, victims' representation in court, textbooks, emergency humanitarian aid for women leaving a crisis centre, additional work hours for counsellors and lawyers due to the increased number of cases, etc.

The organizations running the domestic violence hot lines are reporting an approximately 30 per cent rise in the number of complaints. The prosecution service reported that the number of domestic violence cases trebled in 2021, Raeva said.

Due to the pandemic, numerous women have found themselves trapped with their aggressors at home.

Thirty-seven Bulgarian women were murdered in 2020 by a husband, partner, ex-partner, or a close relative. This means that, on average, about every two weeks a woman lost her life due to domestic violence. At least 15 domestic violence fatalities have occurred in 2021 so far.

The campaign is already supported by Avon Cosmetics Bulgaria, Sofiyska Voda, Raiffeisenbank, Melon, and the British Embassy in Sofia.

The BFW is planning to use the funds raised to support as many crisis and counselling centres across the country as possible. Every day these centres offer help by providing abused women and children with the essentials for starting a new life: temporary accommodation, social protection, psychological counselling and legal aid.
