Speaking at the Second Annual Transport, Logistics and Freight Forwarding Forum, which is organized by the Manager magazine at Sofia's Inter Expo Center here on Wednesday, Manuela Naessl, head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development's (EBRD) Bulgarian branch said that the EBRD supports and promotes public-private partnerships in the field of infrastructure. She specified that this is necessary because of the budgetary constraints faced by governments in improving connectivity through their own efforts.

Naessl, who spoke during a panel dedicated to the benefits and effects of granting a concession for Vasil Levski Airport to SOF Connect, identified aviation as a growing sector and a strong driver of economic development, potential, and investment for both Bulgaria and the entire region. As an international financial institution, regional connectivity is of particular interest to the EBRD, along with support for projects in the field of sustainability, she noted.

Naessl expressed satisfaction with the work on the expansion of Vasil Levski Airport and the operator's plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2036. The EBRD is supporting the concessionaire with a loan of EUR 50 million.

The other participants in the panel were Jesus Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect; Michael Stanton-Geddes, Director of Economics & Competition at Airports Council International Europe; and Pablo Escutia, head of the Digital Practice in Spain of the Kearney management consulting firm.
