In the first quarter of 2025, the volume of goods transported by land and water freight transport increased by 5.8% compared to the same period in 2024. However, the transport work performed (measured in ton-kilometers) decreased by 2.5%, according to preliminary data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI), published on Tuesday.
NSI records show that during the same quarter of 2024, there was a 0.9% year-on-year increase in transported goods, while the transport work had decreased by 5.3%.
The number of passengers transported, as well as the transport work performed by passenger transport (land, water, and urban electric transport), declined in Q1 2025 by 1.7% and 19.1% respectively. In comparison, during the same period in 2024, the number of transported passengers had increased by 13.4%, and the transport work had risen by 11.9% year-on-year.
In land freight transport, the volume of goods transported in Q1 2025 rose by 7.3%, while the transport work decreased by 3%. River and sea transport carried 362,800 tons fewer goods, but transport work (in ton-kilometers) increased by 16.7%.
In land passenger transport, there was a 5.4% decrease in the number of passengers transported, and a 24.7% drop in transport work. Water passenger transport saw 17,500 fewer passengers, but the transport work increased by 0.8 million passenger-kilometers.
Urban electric transport companies (e.g., trams, trolleybuses) transported 2.9% more passengers, with transport work increasing by 8%.
