Bulgarian Households' Spending on Sporting Goods Lowest in EU in 2020

In 2020, Bulgaria was last out of 22 Member States for households' expenditure on sporting goods and services, show data released by Eurostat on Friday. Bulgarian households had an average household expenditure of 24 purchasing power standard (PPS), compared to the top-ranking Luxembourg with 628 PPS.

PPS is an artificial currency unit that eliminates price level differences between countries. 

Among the various sporting goods and services, the category in which EU households spent the most in 2020 was recreational and sporting services (gym visits, swimming, etc). The highest share of expenditure in this category was registered in Cyprus (93.7%), followed by Bulgaria (81.3%). The lowest share was observed in Greece, 19.2%.

The second largest category in terms of household expenditure was major durables for outdoor recreation, with Belgium topping the list (36.7%). At the bottom was Hungary (0.4%), followed by Bulgaria (0.8%).
