The annual Imperial Eagle Festival will once again take place in Topolovgrad on October 18, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) said on Wednesday.

The event, organized jointly by BSPB and Topolovgrad Municipality, will feature products from 60 local producers, artworks by regional creators, a folklore programme, tastings of traditional dishes, and eco-workshops for children. The festival aims to promote the conservation of one of Bulgaria’s most endangered bird species and to encourage sustainable tourism.

The celebration will bring together nature enthusiasts, farmers, chefs, and folklore ensembles to honour the unique nature and culture of the Sakar region. The festival’s programme will feature a farmers’ fair, a culinary and craft market, educational games, art workshops, exhibitions, and music events dedicated to the protection of the imperial eagle. The festival will conclude with a concert by Stefan Valdobrev, preceded by a performance by young local singer Lili Licheva.

A large mural dedicated to the imperial eagle is also being created in Topolovgrad. The facade of a residential building at one of the town’s entrances will be adorned with an image of the iconic Sakar bird. The project is by English artist Sarah Yates (Faunagraphic), who lives in the region and has painted nature-inspired murals in the UK, the US, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Romania, and other countries.

The Imperial Eagle Festival is supported by the Green Belt of Southeastern Bulgaria project, funded by the Endangered Landscapes Programme (ELSP). The programme is managed by the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, a collaboration between the University of Cambridge and leading international conservation organisations. Both the University and the ELSP are supported by Arcadia, a charitable fund of Peter Baldwin and Lisbet Rausing, the statement said.
