site.btaPolish Ambassador Opens Monument of Revolutionary Adam Mickiewicz in Sveti Vlas
The Ambassador of Poland in Bulgaria, Maciej Szymanski, opened a bas-relief of the Polish poet, playwright, essayist, translator and revolutionary Adam Mickiewicz in the Black Sea resort of Saint Vlas on Monday. "Adam Mickiewicz is a national hero for us, a great patriot who did a lot to restore Poland on the world map", said Szymanski, who noted that the monument is important because more Bulgarians and tourists of Sveti Vlas will learn about Poland in this way.
The opening ceremony of the bas-relief was also attended by Sveti Vlas Mayor Ivan Nikolov, former Foreign Affairs Minister Solomon Passi, as well as municipal councillors. The monument was built by the sculptor Petko Yordanov, Director of the art gallery in Yambol, with the support of the Bulgarian Memory - Dinevi Brothers Foundation.
"For Poland, Mickiewicz is an icon, as Botev is for Bulgaria. His activities related to the development of the Polish National Movement have inspired many Bulgarian revivalists and fighters for national liberation," said Stoyan Rajchevski, Manager of the Bulgarian Memory - Dinevi Brothers Foundation.
In 1855, Mickiewicz had a 20-day stay in Burgas on his way to Constantinople, noted Rajchevski. "These facts have been described by foreign writers and journalists, so we know where Mickiewicz lived and what he did in Burgas," he said. The city of Burgas has paid tribute to the Polish poet as early as 1949, when a monument of Mickiewicz was built in the Sea Garden of the city.
