Sofia Marks Africa Day on May 27

Africa Day this year will be marked on May 27, Saturday, in the garden in front of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia. The event will be opened by Vice President Iliana Iotova, the organisers said.

Entrance to the festival is free. There will be a music programme and a bazaar with traditional food, drinks, clothes, handmade accessories and authentic gifts. All the organizers of the event - the embassies of the African countries of Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, South Africa, and the honorary consulates of Ethiopia, Mauritius and Seychelles in Bulgaria - will take part in the bazaar.

"Visitors will have the opportunity to get closer to the traditions of Africa, which will be presented with dances and performances reflecting African identity, unique rhythms and melodies. All will be able to sample the flavours of African cuisine, which offers distinctive combinations of spices, tastes and textures," the organisers said.

Africa Day is celebrated annually around the world to mark the founding of the African Union, an organisation that has been seeking indigenous African solutions to continental problems for 60 years and develops a new concept each year. This year the theme of Africa Day is "The Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area Implementation”. The event celebrates the creation of greater potential for economic development, prosperity and sustainable development across the continent.
