A Panikhida service was held in Sofia on Saturday to honour the memory of the military personnel who died in the wars for national liberation and unification, in peacekeeping missions, and in the line of duty during peacetime.

The Michaelmas service took place near the Military Museum-Ossuary at Sofia’s Central Cemetery and was led by Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil.

"The calendar of every civilized nation includes holidays and events that honour the memory of its ancestors," Patriarch Daniil said. "We, as Bulgarians, are proud that the Bulgarian Armed Forces have produced soldiers, warriors, who never allowed military honour to be stained by the capture of a single battle flag. Today, more than ever, we understand the need to cultivate this virtue - the love between people," he added.

"Today we also honour the Bulgarian awakeners - those who, through their words, example, and way of life, taught the people to cultivate this virtue to such an extent that one would be ready to sacrifice their soul for honour, for the greater good, for the life and freedom of others, and for the greater good of our nation,” Patriarch Daniil said.

President Rumen Radev attended the service and paid tribute at a memorial to soldiers who died for Bulgaria and plaques commemorating Bulgarian servicepersons who died in Cambodia and Karbala.

Attending were also Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov, the Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Efimov, members of Parliament, senior officers of the Armed Forces, representatives of the Defence Ministry, and members of military-patriotic organizations.

At the close of the ceremony, those present knelt in tribute to the fallen soldiers.
