Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov called for the immediate resignation of the government and fresh elections in a social media post on Wednesday.

He also said that GERB leader Boyko Borissov had made it clear that GERB-UDF would withdraw from governance.

In a separate post on Vazrazhdane’s page, Kostadinov said that Borissov had given a firm indication that GERB-UDF would leave the government. He noted that Borissov recognized he had only two choices: to call new elections or, within a year, risk becoming politically irrelevant.

On Tuesday, Borissov said there was no place for GERB-UDF in such a government. The comment came during a meeting with the GERB-UDF parliamentary group and Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov at the party headquarters, following GERB-UDF’s sixth-place finish in the local council elections in Pazardzhik.

“We will not break the coalition, but we will not remain in this position where every day it is explained as Borissov-Peevski,” Borissov said. He also noted that Delyan Peevski is not part of the government, and if Peevski were to join officially, Borissov would decide on the appropriateness for GERB-UDF after consulting the Joint Governance Council.

Shortly after, Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) Chair Delyan Peevski issued a statement expressing his agreement with Borissov’s view that this marked a pivotal moment for the country’s governance.

Peevski noted that MRF fully supports the government of Rosen Zhelyazkov, even though it does not occupy any ministerial, deputy ministerial, or executive roles. He stated that MRF is prepared to take on responsibility, that a negotiating team will be appointed in the coming days, and that he expects an invitation from Zhelyazkov and other governing parties for discussions, as Borissov previously proposed.
