The International Right to Know Day is being marked in Bulgaria for the 23rd time on September 28.

The Access to Information Programme is presenting its annual awards for contributions to freedom of information at 11:30 a.m. at the Peroto (The Quill) Literary Club in Sofia. Nominees are competing in six categories: four Golden Key awards recognizing citizens, journalists, NGOs, and institutions, as well as two “anti-awards” – the Padlock and the Tied Key.

The aim of the initiative is to encourage active citizens, journalists, and non-governmental organizations to exercise their right of access to information, to motivate institutions to meet their obligations under the Access to Public Information Act, and to act with transparency and accountability toward society. At the same time, the awards highlight institutions that undermine or violate the right of access to information.
