National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova said that just as 117 years ago, the international situation today is not calm, and it is natural to seek allies to achieve the national goals. "Bulgaria is a country that respects international treaties and adheres to the principles of international law," she said in Veliko Tarnovo, the centre of Monday's celebrations of the 117th anniversary of the Proclamation of Bulgaria's Independence.

"This is a very important date for the State asserting its own identity. Independence, beyond being a personal sense of self, means that the Bulgarian State must assert its interests clearly and fight for them," Kiselova added.

Her message echoed the motto inscribed on the historic National Assembly building: "Unity Makes Strength".
