Constitutional Court Judge Atanasova Appointed Bulgaria's Representative in Venice Commission

Costitutional Court Judge Desislava Atanasova was appointed Bulgaria's representative in the European Commission for Democracy through Law, better known as the Venice Commission, by a decision of the Council of Ministers on January 31, shows a BTA check with the Legal Information System of the Council of Ministers.

By the same decision, Borislav Belazelkov was appointed Bulgaria's deputy representative in the Venice Commission.

Atanasova and Belazelkov were sworn in as Constitutional Court judges on January 26, 2024. They were elected members of the Constitutional Court from the parliamentary quota on January 19. Atanasova was supported by 159 MPs and Belazelkov by 154 MPs. 

The Venice Commission is the Council of Europe's advisory body on constitutional matters, whose role is to provide legal advice to its member states and, in particular, to help states wishing to bring their legal and institutional structures into line with European standards and international experience in the fields of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
