Participants in the National Breast Surgery Conference, held under the auspices of the Bulgarian Surgical Society, stressed the need to expand the age range for breast cancer screening as a key prevention measure. The roundtable discussion featured both Bulgarian and international surgical specialists.

One of the main recommendations was the adoption of a standardized early diagnosis algorithm. The proposal recommends that women aged 20 to 40 have yearly gynaecological and breast exams, while those over 40 should have screenings every 6-8 months. Participants noted that ultrasound and mammography are already covered by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

Data presented at the conference showed that screening programs in Europe have reduced breast cancer mortality by 25-30%. Additionally, there were calls to increase clinical pathways for specific procedures, ensuring better access to treatment. The proposals will be submitted to the relevant institutions, including the NHIF.

"Patients must receive the highest quality and most effective treatment for the best possible outcomes," said Hristo Dimitrov, a member of the Board of the Bulgarian Medical Association.

Vanyo Vidkov from the Sofia Medical Association highlighted the existence of a fund for young doctors, allowing them to apply for continued medical education and training.

During the first day of the conference, experts noted that Bulgarian breast cancer patients have shorter lifespans compared to those in the EU, with no national screening program in place.
