The Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIEW) Sofia carried out an inspection of the Struma River after a report was filed on Saturday that the river near the town of Pernik may be polluted, with the water in it running brown.

Assistance was requested from the Executive Environment Agency to carry out field measurements. Water samples were collected for physico-chemical analysis.

In late September, RIEW carried out another inspection following a report of pollution in the river. At the time, the experts concluded that there were no exceedances indicating that the Struma had been polluted.

An investigation and other procedural actions are underway at the direction of the Pernik Regional Prosecution Service, the Appellate Prosecution Service in Sofia reported on September 27, as the river near Pernik was confirmed to be polluted. The Prosecution pointed out that this endangered the local flora and fauna.
