"We need to act preventively and for this reason we decided to send letters to the regional governors, who in turn should contact the mayors of the settlements and test the disaster response readiness," said caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev at the beginning of Wednesday's government meeting.
"Whatever is needed will be done. The European cyclone, fortunately for us, is passing Bulgaria by at the moment, but we cannot just rely on nature's favour and luck. That is why we are doing everything we need to do," the caretaker Prime Minister said.
"Already yesterday [Tuesday] we have contacted the governors along the Danube in Bulgaria because we see that there are concerns. Yesterday the river level rose in Budapest and the rainfall in Austria is having its effect. It is obvious that the level of the Danube will rise here as well, hopefully this increase will be small enough," Glavchev said.
