Deputy Foreign Minister Elena Shekerletova met the newly appointed Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Sofia, Esen Aydogdiev, and received copies of his credentials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry's press service said on Tuesday.

Shekerletova pointed out the importance of maintaining good relations and working together with Turkmenistan, which she sees as a key partner for Bulgaria in Central Asia and the Caspian Sea region. This is significant for both countries and fits with the EU's 2019 Strategy for Central Asia and its policy of closer cooperation with Central Asian countries, given the current global changes.

During the meeting, both sides agreed to increase and expand trade and economic cooperation and work together in other areas of mutual interest. Bulgaria is interested in strengthening its bilateral relations with Turkmenistan, focusing on energy and energy diversification, and in joint projects for building energy and transport infrastructure within the context of Europe-Asia connectivity.

The discussion also included current developments in the international situation, challenges to global stability and peace, and other topics on the international agenda.
