The critically low level of the Danube River hinders shipping in the Bulgarian section of the river, Ivelin Zanev, Director of the Study and Maintenance of the Danube River Executive Agency, said in Ruse on Tuesday.

The level of the Danube at Ruse on Tuesday was 4 centimetres below the conditional zero level. "The forecast for the next two days is that it will drop by another 9 centimetres", he noted, adding that critical sections in the areas of the islands of Belene, Batin, Vardim and Vetren are hampering navigation.

"Due to the intense rainfall that began in the upper and middle reaches of the river, the forecasts are that within 10 days there will be a slight increase in water levels. This will normalize the conditions for shipping in the short term," Zanev also said.
