The St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia has been ranked 401-600 out of 1,963 universities around the world in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024, published on June 12. Sofia University (SU) participated in the ranking for the sixth consecutive year, advancing by 200 places since 2023, when 1,591 universities were ranked, the SU press centre said on Wednesday.

The ranking assesses universities against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SU has been ranked in 11 out of 17 SDGs, significantly improving its ranking regardless of the increased number of participants. The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings use carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparison across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.

Sofia University ranked 101-200 for SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 101-200 for SDG 13 (Climate Action), 201-300 for SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), 301-400 for SDG 5 (Gender Equality), 301-400 for SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 301-400 for SDG 14 (Life Below Water), 301-400 for SDG 15 (Life on Land), 401-600 for SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 801-1000 for SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), and 401-600 for SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

Times Higher Education presents the Impact Rankings for 2024, identifying universities that excel across multiple United Nations SDGs. Not only do these institutions stand out in individual areas, but they also demonstrate comprehensive excellence in contributing to global sustainable development. By excelling in a variety of SDGs, these universities showcase their commitment to addressing the world's most pressing challenges, including environmental sustainability, social inclusion, economic growth, and partnerships.

These leading universities are recognized for their overarching impact across several dimensions of sustainable development, making significant contributions to creating a sustainable and resilient future.

Times Higher Education evaluated 2,152 universities from 125 countries and regions to produce the overall Impact Ranking for 2024.
