The first two black (cinereous) vulture chicks have hatched at the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park, the park's administration told BTA. This is big success for the park as well as all organizations working for the restoration of the endangered species in Bulgaria, because the chicks' parents are the first pair of black vultures to nest in the park in some 90 years.
The two vultures were donated by the regional government of Extremadura, Spain, in 2019. They were released in the nature park in the summer of 2020. They formed a pair last year but did not have chicks, perhaps due to the late nesting. They inhabit an artificial nest made by Kartalsko Gnezdo Foundation in 2022.
A total of 31 black vultures have been released in Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park. There are seven nesting pairs, of which two have eggs.
The black vulture was listed as extinct in Bulgaria in 1985. Decades of work by nongovernmental organizations, park directorates, and institutions as well as several EU projects have led to the return of the species in this country.
