Defence Ministry Launches Public Procurement for Overhaul of Six Mig-29 Engines

The Ministry of Defence has launched a public procurement for the overhaul of six engines for MiG-29 fighter jets, data in the the Public Procurement Register shows. The procurement has been launched on April 5, 2024 and the deadline for submitting bids is May 17, 2024.

The estimated value of the procurement is BGN 19,620,000 (VAT excluded), and 23,544,000 (VAT included).

On August 11, 2023, the Defence Ministry signed a contract for the overhaul of six MiG-29 engines. In order to ensure the airworthiness of MiG-29 fighters so they reach operational capability for combat duty with the new F-16 Block 70 aircraft, the Defence Ministry awarded the repair to Polish state-owned company Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 2 S.A.

In end-August 2023, outgoing Deputy Defence Minister Stanimir Georgiev said that MiG-29 engines were to be sent to Poland for repair.

In July 2023, outgoing Defence Minister Todor Tagarev said that the Bulgarian Air Force will rely on MiG-29 fighters until F-16 Block 70 aircraft take over full security of Bulgarian airspace.
