The GERB party cannot form a government with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms as its sole partner, because such a coalition would cause division in a society already plagued by discord, GERB deputy leader Tomislav Donchev said on bTV on Friday evening. Donchev said: "No partnership is off limits so long as it does not foster division in society."
Snap parliamentary elections are due in Bulgaria later in the year. They are expected to coincide with the European Parliament elections on June 9.
Asked about the possibility of GERB putting together a government with Continue the Change and Democratic Bulgaria again, Donchev said: "Everything that is going on is making this ever harder to do, but above all, it depends on the outcome of the elections. Earlier election results, the will of the people, assigned the politicians a task which they repeatedly failed to complete over the last few years."
"I do not want to rule out anything. I just want Bulgaria to have a stable government," he went on to comment. According to him, there should be much more on the agenda of public policies than the recruitment of senior staff to the regulatory authorities and the reform in the judicial system. "There are a host of other important things that should happen in this country," Donchev argued. In this context, he singled out the domains of education, industrial and economic development, and armed forces upgrading. "Discussions should be held about the whole spectrum," he said.
