The Prosecutors Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council on Thursday released Nevena Zartova from office as administrative head of the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office (SRPO).
Prosecutor Svetlana Mitova of the Supreme Prosecution Office was appointed acting head of the SRPO until the election of a regular office holder.
Zartova's resignation was approved by a unanimous vote and without a debate, as was the motion on Mitova's appointment.
At Zartova's request, the Chamber reinstated her as prosecutor at the SRPO.
Her four deputies: Borislav Georgiev, Ivan Stefanov, Mima Kutskova-Damyanova and Todor Kuyumdzhiev, were also released after resigning and, too, were reinstated as prosecutors at the SRPO.
In a televised interview on Wednesday, Zartova said she was resigning to ease a build-up of administrative tensions at the SRPO in recent months. She argued that the three comprehensive inspections of the prosecution office's entire operation since the summer of 2023 had made the work of her colleagues and the administration extremely difficult. A fourth such inspection began on Friday.
In their letter of resignation, the four deputy regional prosecutors strongly distanced themselves from Zartova’s actions and backed the efforts of acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov to reform Bulgaria's prosecution service.
The SRPO is the prosecution office with the largest caseload in Bulgaria.
