A flu epidemic was declared in Smolyan Region between January 18 and 24, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday. The decision was made on the basis of an increase in the cases of influenza and acute respiratory diseases, which have reached an epidemic average of 268.9 per 10,000 population in the region.

The temporary anti-epidemic measures that will enter into force on Thursday include: suspension of routine consultations for healthy pregnant women and children; suspension of preventive check-ups and mandatory immunizations and re-immunizations; suspension of visits to hospitals and social care facilities for children and adults; daily examinations in nurseries, kindergartens and schools, with sick children to be returned home; no sick staff to be allowed to work; disinfection and frequent ventilation of premises.

The Regional Health Inspectorate in Smolyan has notified the regional governor, municipality mayors and the heads of medical and health institutions to create the necessary organization to implement the anti-epidemic measures to limit the spread of influenza and acute respiratory diseases in the region.

Nikola Zapryanov, Head of the Regional Education Department in Smolyan, told BTA that currently some 12 to 13% of the school students are absent from in-person classes and no schools are to be closed due to the epidemic.
