“Some ministers from the regular cabinet definitely did not protect the national interest,” State Agency for National Security (SANS) Chairperson Plamen Tonchev said during his hearing in Parliament in connection with the recording released last Friday by the former Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria MP Radostin Vassilev.

Vassilev asked whether SANS had evidence that attempts were being made by foreign embassies to "install" their agents in the Bulgarian security services, as well as whether agents of foreign countries were appointed ministers.

“It is difficult to answer such a question directly with a "yes" or "no", but the behaviour of some ministers who were in the regular cabinet definitely did not protect the national interest,” Tonchev said.

He gave an example with pre-trial proceedings against an adviser to a former prime minister for providing information to a citizen of North Macedonia about the negotiation process: “We all know that the actions of this person were not carried out without the knowledge of their supervisor,” stressed the SANS Chair. He did not name the adviser nor under which government this case was established.

"The issue is extremely sensitive for the whole society. I will not be able to answer in detail as a pre-trial has been initiated in the case," Tonchev explained.
