Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev has instructed prosecutors close to him how to conduct and conclude high-profile investigations so that they can be left on the back burner for long periods of time and be used to blackmail political figures, Deputy Prosecutor General and National Investigation Service (NIS) Director Borislav Sarafov said on Monday.

Sarafov gave a briefing after Geshev spoke to the media earlier in the day. Sarafov accused Geshev of using his influence to ensure that what is popularly known as the Barcelonagate case, a money-laundering investigation against GERB-UDF coalition co-leader and former prime minister Boyko Borissov, is closed before the legally established timeframe.

Sarafov's "back burner" allegation drew a reaction from Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) coalition late on Monday evening. They said they will call Geshev, Sarafov and the latter's deputy in the NIS, Yassen Todorov, to a hearing at the National Assembly. CC-DB expect the three to say: what cases have been left on the back burner and what politicians have been blackmailed with them; who has texted the Prosecutor General to tell him how and when to do his job; who has pressured the Supreme Judicial Council into demanding the Prosecutor General's resignation; who are the politicians who have communicated with the Prosecutor General; and why Sarafov fears for his life and received bodyguard protection from the Justice Ministry earlier in the day.
