In view of the devastating earthquake in Turkiye, various experts, such as engineers and seismologists, have warned that buildings in Bulgaria, despite being designed to certain earthquake-resistance criteria in the past, have undergone numerous unsupervised repairs and renovations by their inhabitants, which may have compromised their structural integrity and earthquake resistance. Panel apartment blocks, which are predominant in larger cities and were constructed mostly in the 1970s and 1980s, have mostly not been inspected to see if the iron bars linking the separate panels have corroded throughout the years.
