An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 was recorded at 10:48 p.m. local time in the area of Balikesir, Turkiye, according to data from the National Seismological Centre at the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NIGGG–BAS).

The epicentre was located approximately 320 km from Svilengrad, 360 km from Burgas, 370 km from Haskovo, and 560 km from Sofia, the institute reported.

Preliminary information indicated that the tremor was felt in parts of southern Bulgaria, including the cities of Haskovo, Burgas and Plovdiv, NIGGG–BAS said in a statement on its Facebook page.

Facebook users also commented on the institute’s page that the strong earthquake in Turkiye had been felt in other parts of Bulgaria as well.
