Vice President Iliana Iotova and Culture Minister Marian Bachev visited Montenegro Wednesday to open Bulgaria’s programme as guest of honour at the 19th International Book and Education Fair and to unveil a street in Cetinje named after writer Ivan Vazov.
“If you understand your neighbours, conflicts will find no place between us,” Iotova said at the plaque-unveiling ceremony, which Mayor Nikola Duraskovic hailed as “proof of mutual respect”. Bachev noted that “the importance of this cultural dialogue, which is the best diplomacy between countries, is great”.
At the fair in Podgorica, Bachev opened the Bulgarian stand, announcing a Pleven Philharmonic concert and an Ivan Vazov National Theatre performance. “Bulgaria is the guest of honour, so the coming days will showcase Bulgarian culture,” he said, adding that culture and education “underpin dialogue”. Iotova called the honour “a recognition of Bulgaria's contribution to the world and European cultural treasury” and invited visitors to the “Alphabet and History” exhibition.
Speaking to Bulgarian media, Iotova urged Parliament to revive a draft law granting special status to Bulgaria’s early capitals, saying it would tap EU funds for cultural tourism. “I’m a strong advocate and I believe the Culture Ministry under Minister Marian Bachev will revive the bill,” she said.
