Apriltsi Municipality is implementing projects worth BGN 8 million, Mayor Tihomir Kukenski said during a local conference held here on Friday. The event was part of BTA’s Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project.

“In practice, European funds are the financial injection that makes it possible to revive small settlements, such as Apriltsi. Over the past year, we have started many projects, some of which are in an advanced phase, others are in the process of implementation,” Kukenski emphasised. He noted that with BGN 3.2 million of European funding, a new Home for the Elderly will be built in Apriltsi, since the existing building does not meet the requirements for providing a normal environment for the elderly. He also said that several social projects for the care of the elderly are being developed and implemented, worth over BGN 200,000.

Another large-scale project that Apriltsi Municipality is implementing is the renovation of the Municipality’s dormitory, worth BGN 2.3 million, Kukenski pointed out, adding that each of the rooms will have a bathroom and that the building will also be equipped with an elevator. "We also have smaller projects. We renovated the equipment of one of the tourist trails, purchased a stage for the holidays, equipped the four parks of the municipality with street fitness equipment. Children can now enjoy the new benefits (as well)," he concluded.

BTA's Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project aims to raise public awareness and foster open dialogue about cohesion policy, local achievements, and the implementation of the EU's policy priorities. The project kicked off with a conference in Veliki Preslav in November 2024. The schedule of conferences until the end of September 2025 includes events in the following cities: Blagoevgrad, Burgas, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Vidin, Vratsa, Gabrovo, Dobrich, Kazanlak, Kardzhali, Kyustendil, Lovech, Montana, Pazardzhik, Pernik, Pleven, Razgrad, Ruse, Samokov, Svishtov, Sliven, Smolyan, Sofia, Stara Zagora, Troyan, Targovishte, Haskovo, Shumen, and Yambol. Cross-border conferences will be held in Belgrade, Bosilegrad, Bucharest, Edirne, Skopje, and Thessaloniki. The project builds on the Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future and Europe in Bulgaria: A Common Future projects, implemented by BTA in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
