Europe's largest railway grain transshipment terminal was inaugurated in the Romanian town of Dornesti, Suceava County (on the border with Ukraine) on Friday, the local media reported.

The officials attending the event included the Secretary General of the Government Adrian Vestea, Victor Ponta, honorary international economic relations adviser to the Prime Minister of Romania, and Ukraine's Ambassador in Bucharest Ihor Prokopchuk. Bulgaria's Ambassador to Ukraine Radko Vlaykov was also among the guests.

The facility was built through a public-private partnership and cost approximately EUR 10 million, provided by Grampet Group, a leader in Romania's private rail freight transport industry.

"The new complex in Dornesti, which is located in immediate proximity to Ukraine, will allow the transport of 3 million tonnes of grain annually, thus becoming a strategic point in streamlining the traffic of goods to the port of Constanta," Grampet Group President Gruia Stoica said during the inauguration. He explained that the facility is equipped similarly to large sea and river ports.

After the inauguration ceremony, Ambassador Vlaykov described the project as an excellent example of public-private partnership in Romania which helps address the problem of the export of wheat and generally grain crops from Ukraine.

"The project is very important for Bulgaria, too, as a country contributing to this grain crop transit. Trains originating from the Dornesti terminal will be reaching Constanta or, via Bulgaria, the Aegean," the diplomat specified.

He told BTA that he had talked to Stoica about the cooperation pursued so far and the new projects that can be implemented in future.
