Bulgaria first applied for membership in 1991. Bulgaria's annual membership fee of one million Deutsche marks was calculated as a percentage of GDP. CERN has an annual budget of 1,000 million Swiss francs.

CERN was established in 1953 as a governmental organization for fundamental research in hi-tech physics and nuclear physics. Bulgaria's cooperation with it dates from 1963.
