Thirty-three years ago today, Bulgaria recognized Ukraine's independence.

After the independence referendum in Ukraine on December 1, 1991, then Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Stefan Tafrov, submitted a proposal to the Council of Ministers for recognition of the declared Ukrainian independence. On December 5, 1991, the Bulgarian government headed by Prime Minister Filip Dimitrov, recognized Ukraine's independence.

On December 13 the same year, the two countries established diplomatic relations. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Anatoly Zlenko, arrived in Sofia for this purpose.
