European Council President Antonio Costa met with Mahmoud Abbas ahead of a meeting of the League of Arab States leaders on Gaza, Costa wrote in a post on X. "Important meeting with the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, on the eve of the extraordinary summit of the League of Arab States on Gaza. The EU supports the Palestinian Authority and its reform agenda. It needs to play a crucial role in Gaza on the 'day after'," Costa wrote.

The EU urges all parties "to make every effort to uphold the ceasefire and hostages release deal". "Humanitarian aid must be delivered immediately, safely and unhindered to Gaza. We call on all parties to re-engage with the mediators on the talks on the phase two of the deal," the post went.

The European Council President will represent the EU at the League of Arab States summit which will focus on plans for safe return of Palestinians to their homes, the recovery of Gaza and its future control.
