A student opened fire with a on Monday at the medical faculty of Selcuk University in the city of Konya, central Turkiye.

According to the Haberler website, the student initially fired at random. He then fired at the deputy dean and a lecturer at the faculty, Mujdat Yesildal.

The student attempted to shoot himself, but police officers who arrived at the scene disarmed and detained him.

The injured lecturer was admitted to hospital. The cause of the attack was not reported, but the incident caused severe fright among the students. The medical faculty was closed and classes suspended.

The Prosecution Office has launched an investigation into the incident.
