1898: Belgian-owned Sucreries Raffineries Bulgares company opens a sugar factory in Sofia, Bulgaria's first large industrial enterprise.

1918: Teodor Teodorov forms a cabinet (resigns on May 7, 1919, refusing to sign Treaty of Neuilly after Bulgaria's defeat in World War I).

1956: At Melbourne Summer Olympics, freestyle wrestler Nikola Stanchev wins gold and becomes Bulgaria's first Olympic champion.

1981: Monument to Founders of the Bulgarian State is unveiled near Shumen (Northeastern Bulgaria) to mark 13 centuries since the Bulgarian State was founded in 681.

1989: Bulgaria rejoins International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) under resolution of 58th Session of Interpol General Assembly in Lyon, France.
